QUESTION: What is the best film starring Jason Segel?

Jason Segel released another film last week and it made me realise that this will be the third film he has already been in this year. He is slowly starting to be involved in many comedies being released and later on in the year he is due to hit screens again in Knocked Up spin off This Is 40. As he seems to be turning up a lot at the moment I want to ask you, what is his best movie? 1. BAD TEACHER - In Bad Teacher he plays alongside Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake as the P.E teacher who has a crush on Diaz's unsuitable teacher.








2. GULLIVER'S TRAVELS - In Jack Black's take on the classic fairy tale, Segel plays one of the little men whose town is disrupted due to Gulliver's sheer size.








3. FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL - In his breakthrough film Segel plays the boyfriend dumped by a famous television star. Jetting to Hawaii to get away he checks himself accidentally into the same hotel as his former love and her new rock star boyfriend.







4. I LOVE YOU, MAN - Paul Rudd struggles to find a best man for his wedding until he meets Jason Segel who becomes the perfect friend, so perfect in fact that it threatens to ruin Rudd's relationship with his fiancee.








5. THE MUPPETS - He also wrote the film which brought the Muppets back to the big screen. He plays one of their biggest fans who attempts to help them in their quest to prevent a man from selling and destroying their theatre.

Swingers is the story of four wannabe actors moving to New York and trying to make it big. The main thread follows that of Mike (Favreau) who had to break off a six year relationship in New York in order to move west and pursue his dream. Six months later and he is still distraught over the break up and his friend Trent decides to teach him how to get back in the game and become 'money' (irresistible to women) as he likes to put it. In doing this they travel to Las Vegas, back street Hollywood bars and parties up mountains where Mike manages to meet women and ultimately destroy any chance of a relationship in less than an hour. The film is very relatable for most men out there who lack the confidence when talking to women compared to Trent (Vaughn's) abundance of it.

The film is written by Favreau himself and I have to say the script is fantastic. The dialogue really works for the film, and the performances and delivery of the lines by the actors really help the script look great. The story is paper thin and not much to it, but the dialogue within it is brilliant and very funny. One of the scenes involving Mike ringing a girl he met in the bar that night and leaving several messages as the machine keeps cutting him off is brilliant and had me laughing in hysterics. Many of the lines done this and it was a breath of fresh air for some of the comedies released now days. Writer's need to look back at this comedy to see how it should really be done.

The performances in the film are good and are perfect for the tone of this movie. The dialogue must have been hard to learn as there are many occasions when people ramble on in a rant, which is all filmed in one shot. These moments fit the film really well, especially with many tracking shots that cut off peoples head and it is as if you are actually walking behind the actors. The camera work and cinematography isn't great but it works with the film so you can get over it. This is what is great about this film is that it looks low budget and very studenty but that is what makes it such a treat. I wasn't expecting much and found myself pleasantly surprised.

When you watch this film, and I say when because you so should, you will be surprised to see a really young Vince Vaughn, and if you know him Jon Favreau, with them both looking the part as normal everyday guys. I think this is one of Vaughn's first films, before he really hit stardom, and it is plain to see why he was pulled into bigger roles as he is very funny here. Favreau, by all accounts, wrote this script based on his own experience of moving to Hollywood in search of stardom, and his friends who helped him through this time. Those friends were in fact Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingstone who portray themselves with different names in this film. This was how they all were and it is easy to believe that this could be the case, with the performances, camera work, script, and cinematography really keeping the film grounded.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It isn't the best comedy I have seen but it is one of the better ones. I think it is due to it being so relatable and different to over blown comedies out there. The film has a lot of heart and you route for the characters throughout. We are even treated to a late cameo from Heather Graham, who despite her being a little more famous than the other actors at the time, doesn't seem out of place at all, and if anything adds something special to it. There is also a fantastic final scene which had me in stitches and wrapped up the change in characters completely. I advise you to go rent this film it is very, very good.

There are a lot of films being released onto shelves this week. There are 6 for you to choose from which is a lot for one week as usually one film seems to get preference. Unfortunately out of six films released this week I have only seen a big fat zero of them. I'm not really sure why that is but probably because I felt another film deserved my viewing pleasure that weekend. Either way I'm sure I'll catch up with them on DVD, so have a look at what is released and you can decide what you want to see also.

12 Rounds is an action film with clichéd, generic ideas. It must have been pitched as Die Hard With A Vengeance crossed with Speed, starring a wrestler. This is basically what this film is. It is also directed by Renny Harlin who directed Die Hard 2, so if you haven't seen this film the opening of this review has you up to speed of what it is all about as it is very generic and recycled. However it is still a lot of fun and not the worst film in the world.

The story follows a hero local cop (Cena) who in the opening scene manages to capture a notorious terrorist who has evaded arrest for years, however when Cena captures him he is also the reason behind the terrorist's girlfriend being killed. Due to this our villain promises that he will avenge her. One year later and Miles Jackson (the terrorist played by Aidan Gillen) has escaped from jail and contacts Cena (who is now a detective). He has taken Cena's girlfriend (Scott) hostage and has set 12 tasks for Cena to complete in order to see his girlfriend again. Each round either involves Cena making a choice of himself dying or someone else, or attempting to stop a runaway cable car.  This is where most the fun comes in because the action scenes are what make this film alright, and Renny Harlin has often made films that have some fun action scenes in them.

The set up of the film is very much like Die Hard With A Vengeance, which is about a cop having to obey a game of 'Simon says' leading him around New York. Despite the plots being roughly the same Die Hard With A Vengeance is an awful lot better. Firstly the reason for this is the lead actor just isn't charismatic enough to be a hero. This is often a problem when wrestlers turn into actors because they can't really show a range of emotion. John Cena isn't bad at the action sequences and he does make for an action hero in that respect, however when he is involved in dialogue or any emotionally impacting scenes he is poor. I can't imagine him ever getting a character driven role in a movie. The villain Miles Jackson, played by Aidan Gillen is also unconvincing. He is cool and calculating but he just doesn't seem tough enough to have someone like John Cena be afraid of him. He also manages to set up bombs and tasks around the city in a very short time and it all is very implausible. Gillen isn't particularly bad in the role I just feel that he was miscast and that the wrestler should probably have been the bad guy as he looks tough. Ashley Scott is also unconvincing and wasn't really used other than to cry. Her delivery of dialogue was one of her major downfalls but this is also because the script is so typical and unimaginable. The final act of the film becomes an absolute farce and is really over the top. This is the point where the dialogue becomes poor, the CGI looks over the top, the acting takes a down step, and the fighting is implausible. There are scenes that ruin the fun such as this sequence, but there are some scenes that are action packed and really good. The sequence involving the runaway cable car is an exciting thrill ride and is one of the moments that is a lot of fun and keeps you gripped.

I can't really slate the film and it isn't one that I am going to fall in love with. Like I have said many times, it is a lot of fun. I never particularly became bored but I did roll my eyes on several occasions, and found some of the acting and writing a little predictable, but this is what I expected from a film of this nature. It is a carbon copy of other action films, and although that isn't particularly a bad thing it is a reason why this film will never be anything more than a watch when there is nothing else to do. It also proves that wrestlers are not the greatest actors and that Cena will never appear in anything deeper than a generic action film.

A large number of films are released in cinemas this weekend, and looking at the showing times of the films it is clear to see that there are now many films to see with minimal chances to view them. A few weeks ago there weren't many films to choose from but there were hundreds of times to actually see it in a day. Perhaps at the minute this is because there hasn't really been a large film released recently. This can only mean that many will struggle to decide which film to head out and see this weekend so have a look below at what is out and see if any of them seem like the one you will pick.

6 films for you to choose from then, although none of them really stand out and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Chernobyl Diaries are the only two film's trailers I have seen in the cinema. The others are all available online, and are posted here, but some have been released unnoticed. Let's hope that doesn't spoil the film's release. I unfortunately can't make the cinema this weekend so you will have to wait till the middle of next week to read the review of the film I manage to see at the beginning of next week.

This week has given us some exciting news for all different types of movie fans out there. Each one is of a visual medium and from films that are in production now and are highly anticipated, so all of this is not rumour or speculation.

Maleficent follows in the footsteps of Snow White And The Huntsman in being a dark adaptation of a classic fairy tale. The story is that of Sleeping Beauty and is told through the eyes of the evil witch Maleficent who is played by Angelina Jolie. The first image of her as this evil witch can be seen below.











This film is set to be released in 2014 and with Snow White And The Huntsman so far being rated in my top 3 of the year it only leaves me excited for another dark take on a fairy tale.

Another trailer has been released for the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy finale. Many TV Spots, promotional material and pictures have been released in the build up for this film but none of them match up to this new trailer which gives us more footage of Bane, Catwoman and Batman himself. The music is also fantastic and shows that Hans Zimmer knows how to score a Nolan movie. The trailer gave me goose bumps, the film gives me butterflies, and I'm pretty sure on the 19th July I will be wetting myself in anticipation for the release the next day. As well as The Dark Knight Rises, the final Twilight instalment has released a new trailer online. It is in fact the first full length trailer they have released for the film which is due to hit screens in November. The film is bound to gather crowd momentum as it builds to the end of the year, with many Twilight fans being desperate to see the finale of their favourite franchise. Once again I predict that this film will cause many teenage girls to bombard the cinemas, and I'm sure most will be scouring the internet for the trailer. QUESTION: What is the best M. Night Shyamalan twist ending?

After watching Red Lights this weekend I have read reviews that claim the film is a typical M. Night Shyamalan film with a poor twist ending like all of his films. I would completely disagree with this statement. The film is in the Shyamalan mould but his films did not have poor twist endings. They have slowly got worse over the years but his first few films were really good and had some fantastic twist endings. I would even say that the ending of Red Lights is nowhere near as good as some of the first films of Shyamalan. What I want to ask you then is which M. Night Shyamalan film do you think has the best twist ending? I will name 5 films and their stars but I will not reveal the ending in case anyone hasn't seen them.

There are his 5 best films I'm sure. Over the years his films have suffered as he seems to be trying to hard too pull the rug from beneath us at the end of them; however these first 5 he done were some top films with some equally brilliant endings.

New on DVD this week: The Woman In Black

This week sees the film which starred Daniel Radcliffe as a character other than Harry Potter, it is also the film that was given a mild certificate and apparantly scared the bejesus out of everyone who watched it. I still haven't seen it so can not really comment but I am hoping to watch it soon and have my say on the matter. As well as this film there are 2 others which had small release in cinema and 1 that was released on DVD sometime last week without actually having a release date. Weird. Anyway have a look at them below and see if any look good.



THE WOMAN IN BLACK - Daniel Radcliffe stars as a lawyer who goes to a haunted house where he discovers a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman. Despite being warned against it he attempts to unravel the mystery of the woman in black.

SAFE HOUSE - Denzel Washington is a former CIA Agent gone rogue but upon capture is transported to Ryan Reynolds safe house. When he escapes it is down to Reynolds to prove his worth, hunt him down and stop him from selling a potentially lethal piece of information. This is the film that has suddenly appeared on shelves.

RED LIGHTS - Your eyes may deceive!

This week saw a few films released in cinemas with none really catching anyone's eye. After doing a little research into the movies, not reading the reviews, we decided to see the new film starring Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Robert DeNiro, and directed by Buried director Rodrigo Cortes. That film was Red Lights, a film about paranormal investigators who prove illusionists to be frauds. After proving most of their subjects wrong they decide to investigate the one man who managed to evade their theory, a man who has resurfaced after 30 years of going AWOL, that man is Simon Silver played by DeNiro and Murphy and Weaver must see if they can crack his illusion.

This film has been touted as this year's The Sixth Sense, and it can be seen in the same light although it is nowhere near as good. The film does have the perfect tone for the style of the film but falls somewhat short of being a fantastic thriller and it ends up being an enjoyable yet forgetful film. The idea behind it is interesting and I'm sure most of the audience were intrigued watching Weaver and Murphy explain to students how illusionist and psychics con people into believing their powers are real, although it seems odd that students would take a University course in paranormal investigating. This is just one of the many plot problems the film has but the idea behind it is what keeps people going with it.

Another one of these plot holes is when an psychic is found out and arrested for fraud. I understand he was taking people's money but at the end of the day are people simply wanting to be entertained, magic is not real and people don't particularly want to know the process of the trick they just want to see it happen. This is a small problem with the film though and I suppose for the sake of the film we can go along with it. These negatives are evened up with the positives however, and they are the moments when the illusions are taking place. Silver manages to frighten his investigators without even being in the room, and levitates when he is in the room. These moments are the best parts and they are handled excellently by Cortes who has brought a creepy and tense feel to every sequence of the film.

The directing is brilliant, and although some moments of the script are a little too telling, the story is original, with this originality brought through by Cortes' directing. The small problems with the script are that Weaver's character seems to be lecturing each time she talks. Her character looks to be there to simply hand out the exposition to the audience so we can all understand how she can work out how these entertainers con us. Weaver herself is pretty good in the role it is just at times her lines bring her performance down. On the other hand Murphy was brilliant as Tom Buckley, with his fight scene being a highlight of his acting ability. Again his performance is slightly hindered by a twist that doesn't quite pay off in the way it is delivered to us. Again this moment of the film becomes very expositional and I feel it could have been handled in a much better way. DeNiro is not a major fixture in the film and puts in an on automatic performance. Looking back he seems wrong for the role and his final reveal is obvious, which is a shame for a film that could have really pulled the rug from beneath us.






The film is alright. It was never going to win any major awards but it is one that is interesting to delve into. The opening half is tense and creepy and thoroughly enjoyable but in the final half there are some pointless scenes and that early intrigue disappears before the final reveal comes out, which unfortunately isn't that big a deal. It isn't a film I was particularly looking forward to but it is one I did enjoy. There was nothing in the film I loved but nothing I really hated, it was just a film that was a pleasure to watch.

Pros: Murphy's performance and watching the way people manage to trick their audience.

Cons: A final payoff delivered in the wrong way and at times very expositional dialogue.

In Cinemas This Weekend: Tom Cruise is a rock star.

5 films are released into cinemas this weekend and once again it seems to be a quiet week on the major film front. The films released this week are ones that most wouldn't have heard of if they weren't big movie fans. 2 of these films have been circuiting the film festivals around the world, one is an English sports flick coinciding with the upcoming Olympics, and one is a musical. Perhaps there is a hidden gem in there that is about to shock us all. Have a look below.

1. ROCK OF AGES is the first film to be released this weekend and it is a musical starring Tom Cruise as a long haired rock star. This alone makes it sound intriguing. The film is about a boy and girl meeting up whilst they pursue their Hollywood dreams, leading them to a bar run by Alec Baldwin which is the home of many top superstars. On the other hand a group of women are protesting against the club and want it closed down. Also starring: Julianne Hough & Diego Boneta. Sing along song?

2. Next up is Robert Pattinson's latest flick which isn't a Twilight movie. In COSMOPOLIS Pattinson is directed by David Cronenberg and plays a billionaire whose live crumbles around him whilst he goes for a haircut. The trailer makes this film look a weird mix of consumerism vs capitalism along with Pattinson shooting through his own hand, strange. Also starring: Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon & Mathieu Amalric. Odd ball drama?

3. This year's The Sixth Sense is RED LIGHTS a film about psychics and illusion. Robert DeNiro is an illusionist put under the spotlight after his worst critic is killed. Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver are sent in to investigate whether his act is really an illusion. Also starring: Elizabeth Olsen. What will you believe?

4. A film to pair up with the Olympics in London is up next. Noel Clarke writes and stars in FAST GIRLS, which follows a young girl's journey into the Great Britain Olympic running team. Her coach has a lot of faith in her but her new team mates believe her to be a liability. Also starring: Bradley James, Rupert Graves & Lenora Crichlow. Will you run to catch this?

5. Finally is A ROYAL AFFAIR, a film about a revolution against a monarchy started by a young Queen having an affair with her physician. The revolution is set to change a nation and fight against an insane King. Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe Folsgaard, Alicia Vikander & David Dencik. A touch of history?

There are your 5 for the week and each seem intriguing in their own way without either one really standing out. This week will all depend on your fancy and on which film your local cinema will be showing, as not all of these are showing nationwide. I'll let you know on Monday which film I chose.

NEWS - Hugh Laurie in talks to play Robocop villain.

The best bit of movie news for this week has come from an 80's film being remade for a release next year. That film is Robocop that was released thirty years ago, starred Peter Weller, and directed by Paul Verhoeven. That film is now being remade and the actor to play Murphy/Robocop is The Killing actor Joel Kinneman. This may be a bit of a surprise to some but given his performances in The Killing I'm sure he can pull it off. Recently there has also been news that Gary Oldman is to play Robocop's creator, and Samuel L Jackson and Abbie Cornish are also set to star.

The latest news then comes from the studio approaching Hugh Laurie to play the villain of the film, which will be a change of tact for an actor who is best known for playing a doctor in House. Could this be a piece of genius casting or is it completely against type? I'm not sure what to expect of it but if he is cast then it will just be another great actor added to the list of great actors set to appear potentially in a great film. Watch this space.

When Snow White And The Huntsman was released a few weeks ago it has had a few negative reviews due to Kristen Stewart's performance, or the fact she was cast in the first place. My argument is that she was probably one of the best choices; however I am sure there are others out there who could play a fairy tale damsel. 1. CHLOE GRACE MORETZ - A young superstar who has appeared in Dark Shadows, Let Me In and most famously Kick Ass. A girl with a lot of potential and a unique look that could highlight the contrast from slave sister to midnight queen.
